Gymnast Samir Ait Said, who broke his leg, shows true Olympic spirit – eyes Tokyo 2020 (video message)
French gymnast Samir Ait Said, who broke his leg during a vault on Saturday in Rio is recovering well and has posted an inspiring video from his hospital bed.
An awkward landing left him with a horribly twisted leg and visuals of Samir Ait Said writhing in pain had gone viral.
To make matters worse, he was even reportedly dropped by the ambulance staff as he was carried away.
All that is behind now and Samir Ait Said has gone through a successful surgery to repair his tibia and fibula. There are even photos of him taking his first step after the fall.
Samir Ait Said posted a Facebook video from his hospital bed thanking people for the support.
He congratulated his team-mates, who managed to qualify for finals, keeping their act together after his fall.
“That must have been really difficult. They were real warriors. So come on boys, be strong, I'm with you,” he said.
Samir Ait Said also hinted that his career was far from over.
“Believe me the adventure of Tokyo 2020 is still possible. As soon as I'm back on my feet I'll be back in training and searching for that Olympic gold,” said Samir Ait Said.
