An Aaj Tak live show on demonetisation in Varanasi was disrupted after a restive audience threw chairs on Tuesday.

As chairs flew, Aaj Tak stopped live telecast and called in police to control the situation.

The incident took place at the show Halla Bol hosted by anchor Anjana Om Kashyap, who had invited BJP and Congress stalwarts Sambit Patra and Nasem Javed to debate demonetisation.

There was trouble from the word go with Sambit Patra’s opening  remarks triggering a barrage of interventions. Anjana had to step in to pull back the audience and let him complete his remarks.

Sambit Patra compared the economic churn caused by demonetisation with the mythological samdura manthan. His comment that  samdura manthan had caused inconvenience to both gods and demons but had resulted in amruth or nectar of immortality provoked loud  murmurs in the audience.

In the clips available on social media it is not clear what precisely triggered the disruption, which many interpreted as an expression of anger against demonetisation.

In a statement Aaj Tak blamed members of political parties for turning violent.
