Om Puri never recovered from Arnab Goswami’s hounding after Uri controversy, says report
Om Puri’s best friend Naseeruddin Shah said recently that the acclaimed actor’s last days were traumatic.
He went through a legal separation with his wife and was also hounded for his remarks after Uri terror attack.
He had landed in a huge controversy after saying on IBN 7 that nobody had asked the BSF constable Nitin Kumar to join the Army.
Nitin Kumar was killed in a terror attack in Baramulla that followed the larger attack at Uri.
Of the various media programmes that dealt with the subject, his interview with former Times Now editor Arnab Goswami stood out for the sheer acrimony that played out during the show, as NewsCrunch had noted.
Om Puri had even reportedly engaged Smita Singh, an image consultant, to improve his public 'image recently.
She told Mid-day that in the days before he died, Om Puri had ‘poured his heart out’ on what was troubling him.
He reportedly ‘never got over the public humiliation’ on Arnab Goswami's show. His pride was bruised and he was never the same after that night, notes the report.
"Over the last few weeks, he wouldn't stop saying 'Jab main chala jaunga, tab duniya ko meri value hogi…' Smita Singh is quoted saying.
He had never imagined the kind of backlash his remarks would provoke and never recovered from it.
After the episode, he reportedly wanted to start his own political party, called Insaniyat, but did not have the strength for it.
After Om Puri made his comments on Nitin Kumar, Arnab Goswami and several other journalists had gone after him with heavy artillery.
He appeared on News Hour show as an act of penance.
Amidst an acrimonious exchange, he apologised for his comments, and said he was guilty and deserved to be punished.
But he also gave back to Arnab Goswami as good as he got.
When Arnab Goswami described one of his responses as a filmi stunt, the actor said the anchor was like a singer who went from the lowest to the highest key in no time.
Om Puri also said Arnab Goswami did not let anyone speak.
But he found some solace after Nitin Kumar’s family forgave him.
He had gone to Etawah to meet his parents, performed a hawan at their home, and gave them a huge sum of money.
After he apologised, Nitin Kumar's father had reportedly said, "Omji, insaan uttejna mein bohot cheezein bol jata hai. Aapko afsos hai aur humein aapse koi shikwe nahin hai."
The report also talks about other problems which made Om Puri's last says difficult. His stance on the Aamir Khan controversy cost a friendship that mattered to him. His souring relations with his wiufe Nandita was also to haunt him.
