A senior surgeon paused an operation to take a video of a cockroach crawling on the floor of an operation theatre in a hospital in Thane.

The incident occurred at  the government-run 500-bed super specialty Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, reports Mumbai Mirror

Senior orthopaedic surgeon Dr Sanjay Baranwal and another doctor had complained to authorities  about the presence of cockroaches in the OT, but there had been no response.

So, when Dr Baranwal saw a pest during an operation he reached for his mobile phone.

OTs need to be kept highly sanitised to prevent infections.

The Mirror alarmingly quotes senior doctors saying in the past month 25 per cent of the patients, who were operated upon, have suffered from postoperative infections.

The pests are being blamed on poor hygiene practices in the hospital. Every OT should be reportedly washed and fumigated every week.

This is allegedly not being done at the hospital.
