Car racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife charred to death in midnight accident in Chennai (videos)
Professional car racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife were charred to death after their car crashed into a tree in Chennai after midnight.
The car caught fire after it got stuck between the tree and a wall and the couple was trapped inside the car as they could not open the doors.
The accident happened at the Pattinapakkam area, on the Santhome High Road after 1.30 am.
Ashwin, 27, was the national champion for two years in 2012 and 2013 in LGB F4 category. His wife Niveditha, 26, was a doctor.
Fire department officials said when they arrived at the scene, the blaze was still on. They took 16 minutes to douse it and then realised that a couple had been trapped inside, reports NDTV, quoting an official.
"...The lady's legs were seen trapped. The driver's side of the car was also mangled perhaps making it difficult for Ashwin to move," an official said.
Eyewitnesses said they were unable to rescue the couple as the car caught fire instantly and was aflame.
One of them shot a video of the blazing car and shared it on social media.
Ashwin had begun his racing career very young, had signed a deal with German racing team Ma Con Motorsport and driven for the German Formula Championship.
