Donald Trump refuses to shake Angela Merkel's hand during White House joint appearance (video)
The US president Donald Trump refused to shake German Chancellor Angela Merkel's hand during a joint appearance at the White House.
As expected, the two politicians from different ends of the ideological spectrum were uncomfortable with each other. Merkel’s US visit was also loaded with a contentious agenda, including the future of Nato.
Their body language revealed it was all frosty between them.
Trump reportedly greeted Merkel with a handshake when she arrived at the White House. But he ignored requests to do so as they sat together later in front of TV cameras.
In the exercise meant to be a photo opportunity, photographers called upon the two leaders to shake hands.
Merkel was in a mood to oblige, but was not sure of Trump. So, she could be be heard saying: "Do you want to have a handshake?"
Trump ignored both the photographers call and her request. She turned back to face the cameras, making a face.
Despite the discomfort, both leaders said their meeting had been very good.
