Eye-witness account of racer Ashwin Sundar’s fatal accident – all over in a flash
A correspondent of the popular daily The Hindu witnessed racer Ashin Sundar and his wife's fatal accident first hand near Ayappan temple in Chennai.
As the correspondents group took a turn, they glimpsed a BMW cruising at breakneck speed. Before they could even register what had happened, the car crashed into a tree and exploded in a hellish ball of fire.
There was initially piercing screams, but then, all was deathly silent.
Motorists gathered around, but were too afraid to get very close in case there was another blast from the unburnt fuel and the fire in the car. A woman seemed to be inside the car.
They then called the emergency number 100 and police reached quickly. The fire brigade joined the police 15 minutes later.
By then, all was over – the two passengers in the vehicle were dead on spot.
