A Muslim couple, who had gone viral last week for their road-side romance, have reportedly left Mumbai after receiving threats.

As NewsCrunch had noted the Bhiwandi man had proposed to the woman in the middle of the road, amidst  heavy traffic.

He had gone down on his knee to propose to his girlfriend and then hugged her.

A video had captured the incident and made its way to social media.

The Times of India reports that the video had angered the local community leaders who felt it went against their religious tenets.

The man had been made to apologise on video, which was also posted online. A local organization had also reportedly threatened to make lovers do squats in public.

The backlash had even targeted the man’s friends, who were present on the spot.

The harsh response had traumatised the couple and feeling unsafe, they had left the city, note TOI.
