Senior UP official Hafiz Usman shouts "Jai Shri Ram" at RTI meeting (video)
UP information commissioner Hafiz Usman kicked off a controversy raising the slogan of "Jai Shri Ram" several times at a meeting on Tuesday.
He had been invited to a workshop on the Right to Information Act in Moradabad, where senior district officials were present.
Hafiz Usman first deviated from the topic and slammed triple talaq, which he said was not a fundamental right of anyone.
After the organisers tried to cut short his speech he grabbed a mike and shouted "Jai Shri Ram" and "Bharat Mata ki Jai" several times.
Event convenor Anupendra told The Times of India, "It was a workshop dedicated to RTI awareness, where the information commissioner jumped to the triple talaq issue all of a sudden.”
The Pioneer said Hafiz Usman was a loyalist of SP leader Azam Khan.
He told the newspaper that he was prevented from speaking though he was the chief guest.
He said he was only trying to clear misunderstanding between the two communities and bring them closer.
Hafiz Usman also denied there was anything objectionable in his speech.
“…Someone from the audience raised the slogan of 'Jai Shri Ram' first, to which I responded with the same slogan," he said.
The programme was closed abruptly after the controversy.
