Two-year-old Delhi girl in agonizing pain due to lizard like scales on her body (video)
At just two years of age, Shama should be running around and playing with other toddlers – instead the child sits at home grappling with a rare genetic disorder that only affects one person out of sixty lakhs.
Lamellar Ichthyosis occurs when both parents contribute the abnormal gene – even then one out of four such children finally get the disease. Appearing in the initial days of infancy, the disease prevents shedding of the skin at proper time while new skin cells grow regularly, resulting in thick scales like lizards.
The scales then peel off, causing agonizing pain, notes Deccan Chronicle.
The disease is not only cumbersome for vanity – it can have fatal consequences. Since sweat glands on the skin become inactive, the body can overheat dangerously. Also, the disease has left the toddler tantalizingly susceptible to infections.
The young parents, Roshni Banu (22) and Sabir Ali (25) are ready to put everything at stake to help their suffering daughter. But unfortunately, there is not much that they can do.
Doctors in New Delhi said that there is no recorded treatment for this disease as of yet. The only comfort that can be provided to the child is nothing more than applying moisturizer – it would soften her scales and soothe her pain to a degree, but it cannot heal the condition.
