A sessions court in Delhi has permitted the prosecution of a woman who had falsely accused her dance teacher of raping her multiple times on the pretext of marriage.

The woman had joined a dance class in 2015 and got close to the teacher. However, when she could not complete her course, an altercation ensued between the two, reports The Times of India.

During examination by the prosecution after she pressed rape charges, the woman confessed that her complaint was false. While they had indeed had sexual intercourse, it was consensual. The woman further said that her rape charges were motivated by a desire for revenge because of the altercation.

After the woman’s denial of rape, the charges were dropped immediately. The doctors, police officials etc were not required to depose in front of the court anymore as it was considered redundant.

However, the accused had already suffered four months in jail awaiting trial and his reputation was also harmed considerably by the weight of the serious allegations the woman had brought against him.

This prompted sessions court judge Shail Jain to initiate proceedings against the woman. He also noted that she had wasted the court’s and the law enforcement agencies’ precious time by her spurious allegations, and it was necessary to set a deterrent.
