Prakhand Karyalaya at Areraj in Motihari provides a curious sight to visitors - government employees all across the office are going about their work with bulky helmets strictly in place on their heads.

The reason behind this is one of desperation.

The office building is so dilapidated that the Housing Department had declared it to be an uninhabitable building a year back. However, the government has still not provided the employees with an alternate location.

In the monsoon, water regularly trickles down from the damaged roofs and destroys the files stored in the office.

But the bigger worry is that human lives might be lost any day.

Lalan Kumar, an employee, recounted to News India how concrete chunks from the roof keep on crashing to the floor, endangering life and limb.

The helmets may prevent a head injury from a stray falling chunk, but it would not help if the whole roof comes crashing down, an imminent possibility. Even visitors at the office hesitate to go inside to get their work done.

The BDO, Amit Kumar Pandey said that the search for an alternate location for the death trap that is Areraj Prakhand Karyalaya is on. A proposal to shift the office to Krishi Bhawan has been rejected and the hunt for another 'suitable' location is on.

Meanwhile, the employees continue to languish in sheer terror.
