Chennai’s Venkateshwara temple performs cleansing ceremony after visit by naked Naga sadhus (video)

The priests at Lord Venkateswara temple in T. Nagar, Chennai, performed a shuddi or cleansing ceremony after a visit by a team of Naga or Aghori sadhus.  Mehent Raman Giri Naga Baba of Varansai, a nude Naga sadhu, had visited the temple on Friday, accompanied by three semi-clad followers   Giri Naga Baba, who was fully naked, had come smeared with holy ash and lengthy matted hair.

The priests at Lord Venkateswara temple in T. Nagar, Chennai, performed a shuddi or cleansing ceremony after a visit by a team of Naga or Aghori sadhus.

Mehent Raman Giri Naga Baba of Varansai, a nude Naga sadhu, had visited the temple on Friday, accompanied by three semi-clad followers 

Giri Naga Baba, who was fully naked, had come smeared with holy ash and lengthy matted hair.  

A video of the visit, which has gone viral, shows the Baba and his followers worshipping Lord Venkateshwara at the temple.  

Following their visit, the temple administration closed the shrine on Saturday to perform the “shuddhi” ceremony.

A board outside the temple informed the devotees that the temple was closed on Saturday from 5 am to 11.55 am due to ‘some religious reasons.’ 

Quoting temple officials, Deccan Chronicle reports that a Samprokshanam ceremony was performed to cleanse the place as Naga sadhus had visited the temple. 

The sadhus were on a  visit to Tamil Nadu and had reportedly come to the temple on the invitation of a temple committee member.
