Woman tourist dies after she is hit by jet’s blast at Maho Beach (video)

A 57-year-old woman from New Zealand passed away recently after being blown over by a jet blast at Maho Beach on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten. A 57-year-old woman from New Zealand passed away recently after being blown over by a jet blast at Maho Beach on the Caribbean Island of Sint Maarten. 

Maho Beach is incredibly close to the Juliana International Airport. The airport and the beach is separated only by a fence. 

As a result, when a plane takes off from the runway the jet blast send powerful wind in the direction of the beach. So, tourists usually stand near the fence to get blown away by the jet blast into the adjoining water. The sport, called fence surfing, is very famous and people from all over the world come to try it. 

 There are several danger signs posted around the fence as the jet blast is powerful enough to uproot even trees. The woman was enjoying with her family and decided to experience the thrill of the jet blast.

Unfortunately, the blast sent her flying and her head hit the concrete. Paramedics were called but she later died in the hospital. It is the first death due to a jet blast on the beach though people have been severely injured before. 

The director of tourism of Sint Maarten issued a statement which said that he had visited the family of the deceased and that they had recognized their mistake and regretted taking such a risk. He expressed his deepest sympathies to the family.
