A traditional healer has shot into fame in India with a rather drastic cure for chronic back pain.

He makes the patients lie down and strikes on the entire length of their backbone with a hammer. The power-packed strokes take aim at the back of knee joints and calf muscles as well.

A video shows a long line of patients waiting for their turn for the ‘treatment’ which seems to provide some relief. The healer asks a patient to get up and bend. The man does so and touches his toes effortlessly.

The video has gone viral drawing media attention. But the location and the name of the man with an unconventional cure for backache is yet to be traced.

He speaks Marathi with his patients and is probably from the Latur area of Maharashtra.

But doctors have been quick to dismiss it as quackery and cautioned patients against approaching such practitioners.

A Pune-based senior orthopaedic surgeon Satyasheel Naik said modern medicine provided appropriate treatment after carrying out X-rays and MRI scans. Trying to cure backache with hammer would cause long-term harm, he told Aaj Tak.

He also said the government officials should track the man and take action on him.
