21-year-old engineering student dies in Hyderabad afetr botched abortion

A final year engineering student in Hyderabad was killed by excessive blood loss after a surgery to terminate her 5 months pregnancy went wrong.  21 year old K Harika was admitted to Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home by her boyfriend S Madhu on August 5, reports The Hindustan Times.

A final year engineering student in Hyderabad was killed by excessive blood loss after a surgery to terminate her 5 months pregnancy went wrong.

21 year old K Harika was admitted to Anusha Maternity Hospital and Nursing Home by her boyfriend S Madhu on August 5, reports The Hindustan Times.

Though abortions of foetuses above 20 months is illegal in India without a court's permission, the doctor Girija Rani struck a deal with the couple for Rs.20000.

However, during the surgery, things started to go wrong and Harika suffered from excessive bleeding. She was transferred to another hospital in Dilsukhnagar but was declared brought dead.

Her parents allegedly were kept in the dark about the procedure.

Harika's father has lodged a police complaint, accusing the hospital of medical negligence. The family members had also staged a dharma outside the hospital.

Police have shifted the body to Osmania Hospital for an autopsy, while the doctor and the boyfriend has been taken in for questioning.

Vanasthalipuram police has registered cases under Section 312 for causing miscarriage and Section 314 for death caused by act done with the intent of causing miscarriage.

Police are also investigating whether any guidelines of the Indian Medical Council was violated during the abortion resulting in the death of the girl.
