A picture showing the Goddess of wealth, Laxmi, being offered wads of cash as offering during the Varamahalaxmi festival has gone viral on WhatsApp.

There was intense speculation on who the couple were and if the photos were genuine.

Media reports have identified them as K Suryanarayana adn his wife who live in the posh HSR layout in Bangalore.

After people raised questions about possession of such large amounts of cash, Suryanarayana clarified that he had withdrawn 88 lakh rupees from the bank just for this festival, notes Mumbai Mirror.

The man, a BDA broker, even produced the letter he had written to the bank manager for withdrawing such a large sum. He also claimed that he had used 1.23 kilos of gold to decorate the puja room.

His is a rags-to-riches story.

Son to a rickshaw driver, he got into real estate brokering and claims to be worth over 15 crore rupees now, even though an RTI activist claimed he had assets worth 500 crore rupees.

He was allegedly involved in a scam in 2008 that had hit headlines in 2008.

He said uploading the picture on Facebook was a huge mistake and that he would never repeat it again.
