The family of a mother who tortured her three-year-old daughter has stepped in to defend her.

The mother was caught on camera severely admonishing her three-year-old child to make her learn numbers 1 to 5.

The sobbing and traumatised child struggles to identify the numerals in the video. She is severely scolded and slapped as well when she makes mistakes.

The video went viral after top cricketers led by India captain Virat Kohli condemned it and urged parents to go easy on their children.

There was a nationwide campaign to find the girl and ensure her safety with many petitioning to child welfare committees in different states.

Noted Bollywood singer Toshi and Sharib Sabri stepped out to identify the girl as their three-year-old niece, Haya, and suggested that she was overreacting to avoid studies.

Toshi told The Hindustan Times that all the crying was just for that moment so that her mother would let her play.

“In every house there are different kind of children.  Ours is a very stubborn child, but is extremely dear to us),” he added.

Haya was getting homework in nursery and it was important for her to learn, he said.

The mother had reportedly shot the video and shared it in a family WhatsApp group to show how stubborn the girl had become.

Toshi said the mother was upset that the video had gone viral. “No one should judge my sister’s parenting from a 1.5 minute video,” he said.

But there were not many takers for his defence.

Many responded on social media saying the mother continued to torment Haya even after she repeatedly begged her to stop the lessons saying she had a headache.

A psychiatrist, bearded_s, responded to Sharib on Instagram saying the mother and the family needed counselling.
